What is 5-Bromo-DMT
5-Br-DMT, a brominated alkaloid, is found in the Smenospongia ausrea and Smenospongia China sponges. It is a 5-Bromo derivative DMT, which can be found in a number of animals and plants.
5-Br-DMT, also known as 2-(5-Bromo-1H-indol-3-yl)ethyl]dimethylamine, is a hallucinogenic indole alkylamine substance that occurs naturally.
Richard Manske, a Canadian Chemist, synthesized DMT in 1931. However, it was not available at that time. Oswaldo Goncalves de Lima, a microbiologist, recognized DMT’s natural presence in plants in 1946.
Biogenetic precursor to all indole alkaloids is tryptophan, an amino acid. The first step in the synthesis is tryptophan’s decarboxylation to make tryptamine. The S-adenosylmethionine coenzyme, (SAM) is used to methylate tryptamine to create dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
